Off the south west coast of Jutland, just 15 minutes by ferry from the port of Esberg, lies the island of Fanø, which has a folk music tradition going back three hundred years.
Seafaring has played a significant role in the economy of the island, and the music encountered by these sailors in foreign lands has had a considerable influence in shaping the dance melodies known as Sønderhoning and Fannik.
What makes these dances special is that the music is in 2/4 time while the dance itself is in 3/4 time and very reminiscent of the old dance form Pols, Polsk or Polska common thoughout Scandinavia in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. - Setting it apart from mainstream traditional Danish folk music.
The dance tunes selected for this CD are all Sønderhoning, with the exception of one Fannik.
The majority of them have bot been recorded before and disappeared from the repertoire in the sixties.
Although the arrangements are obviously contemporary, ULC have kept the spirit and pulse of these beautiful and haunting melodies.
